The Seller of the Statues

(the) seller (of) / the-statues

(1-4) قبل أيّام كثيرة جدّا...

qabla ʾayyāmin kathīratin jiddan

A great many days ago...

before / days / (a) many(f.) / very

(1-5) كان في قرية رجل مشهور جدّا.

kāna qaryatin rajulun mashhūrun jiddan

In a village, there was a very famous man.

(there) was / in / (a) village / (a) man / (a) famous / very

(1-6) وكان اسم هذا الرّجل آزر.

wakāna- smu hāḍa- rrajuli ʾāzar

And the name of this man was Azar.

and-(he) was / (the) name (of) / this / the-man / Azar

(1-7) وكان آزر يبيع الأصنام.

wakāna ʾāzaru yabīʿu- lʾaṣnām

And Azar used to sell the statues.

and-(he) was (used to) / Azar / (he) sells / the-statues

(1-8) وكان في هذه القرية بيت كبير جدّا.

wakāna hāḍihi- lqaryati baytun kabīrun jiddan

And in this village there was a very big house.

and-(there) was / in / this(f.) / the-village / (a) house / (a) big / very

(1-9) وكان في هذا البيت أصنام، أصنام كثيرة جدّا.

wakāna hāḍa- lbayti ʾaṣnāmun ʾaṣnāmun kathīratun jiddan

And in this house were statues, a great many statues.

and-(there) was / in / this / the-house / statues / statues / (a) many(f.) / very

(1-10) وكان النّاس يسجدون لهذه الأصنام.

wakāna- nnāsu yasjudūna lihāḍihi- lʾaṣnām

And the-people used to prostrate to these statues.

and-(he) was (used to) / the-people / prostrate-they / to-this(f.) / the-statues

(1-11) وكان آزر يسجد لهذه الأصنام.

wakāna ʾāzaru yasjudu lihāḍihi- lʾaṣnām

And Azar used to prostrate to these statues.

and-(he) was (used to) / Azar / (he) prostrated / to-this(f.) / the-statues

(1-12) وكان آزر يعبد هذه الأصنام.

wakāna ʾāzaru yaʿbudu hāḍihi- lʾaṣnām

And Azar used to worship these statues.

and-(he) was (used to) / Azar / (he) worships / this(f.) / the-statues

(2-1) ولد آزر

waladu ʾāzar

The son of Azar

(the) son (of) / Azar

(2-2) وكان آزر له ولد رشيد، رشيد جدّا.

wakāna ʾāzaru lahu waladun rashīdun rashīdun jiddan

And Azar had a righteous child, very righteous.

and-(he) was / Azar / he has / (a) child / (a) righteous / (a) righteous / very

(2-3) وكان اسم هذا الولد إبراهيم.

wakāna- smu hāḍa- lwaladi ʾibrāhīm

And the name of this child was Abraham.

and-(he) was / (the) name (of) / this / the-child / Abraham

(2-4) وكان إبراهيم يرى النّاس يسجدون للأصنام.

wakāna ʾibrāhīmu yaraā- nnāsa yasjudūna lilʾaṣnām

And Abraham used to watch the people prostrate to the statues.

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) watches / the-people / they prostrate / to-the-statues

(2-5) ويرى النّاس يعبدون الأصنام.

wayarā- nnāsa yaʿbudūna- lʾaṣnām

And watch the people worship the statues.

and-(he) watches / the-people / they worship / the-statues

(2-6) وكان إبراهيم يعرف أنّ الأصنام حجارة.

wakāna ʾiibrāhīmu yaʿrifu ʾanna- lʾaṣnāma ḥijārah

And he used to know that the statues are stones.

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) knows / that / the-statues / stones

(2-7) وكان يعرف أنّ الأصنام لا تتكلّم ولا تسمع.

wakāna yaʿrifu ʾanna- lʾaṣnāma tatakallamu walā tasmaʿ

And he used to know that the statues don't eat or drink.

and-(he) was (used to) / (he) knows / that / the-statues / [negative] / (she) eats / and-[negative] / (she) hears

(2-8) وكان إبراهيم يعرف أنّ الأصنام لا تضر ولا تنفع.

wakāna ʾibrāhīm yaʿrifu ʾanna- lʾaṣnāma taḍaru walā tanfaʿ

And he used to know that the statues don't harm and don't benefit.

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) knows / that / the-statues / [negative] / (she) harms / and-[negative] / (she) benefits

(2-9) وكان يرى أنّ الذّباب يجلس على الأصنام فلا تدفع.

wakāna yaraā ʾanna- ḍḍubāba yajlisu ʿalaā- lʾaṣnām falā tadfaʿ

And he used to watch the fly sit on the statues and they don't repel.

and-(he) was (used to) / (he) watches / that / the-fly / (he) sits / on / the-statues / then [negative] / (she) repels

(2-10) وكان إبراهيم يقول في نفسه: لماذا يسجد النّاس للأصنام؟

wakāna ʾibrāhīmu yaqūlu nafsihi limāḍā yasjudu- nnāsu lilʾaṣnām

And he used to say to himself: Why do the people prostrate to the statues?

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) says / in / self-his / why / prostrates / the-people / to-the-statues

(2-11) وكان إبراهيم يسأل نفسه: لماذا يسأل النّاس الأصنام؟

wakāna ʾibrāhīmu yasʾalu nafsahu limāḍā yasʾalu- nnāsu- lʾaṣnām

And Abraham used to ask himself: Why do the people ask the statues?

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) asks / self-his / why / asks / the-people / the-statues

(3-1) نصيحة إبراهيم

naṣīḥatu ʾibrāhīm

The Advice of Abraham

(the) advice (of) / Abraham

(3-2) وكان إبراهيم يقول لوالده:

wakāna ʾibrāhīmu yaqūlu liwālidih

And Abraham used to say to his father:

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) says / to-father-his

(3-3) يا أبي، لماذا تعبد هذه الأصنام؟

ʾabī limāḍā taʿbudu hāḍihi- lʾaṣnām

O my father! Why do you worship these statues?

O / father-my / why / (you) worship / this(f.) / the-statues

(3-4) ويا أبي، لماذا تسجد لهذه الأصنام؟

wayā ʾabī limāḍā tasjudu lihāḍihi- lʾaṣnām

And O my father! Why do you prostrate to these statues?

and-O / father-my / why / (you) prostrate / to-this(f.) / the-statues

(3-5) ويا أبي، لماذا تسأل هذه الأصنام؟

wayā ʾabī limāḍā tasʾalu hāḍihi- lʾaṣnām

And O my father! Why do you ask these statues?

and-O / father-my / why / (you) ask / this(f.) / the-statues

(3-6) إنّ هذه الأصنام لا تتكلّم ولا تسمع!

ʾinna hāḍihi- lʾaṣnāma tatakallamu walā tasmaʿ

Verily, these statues don't talk and don't listen!

verily / this(f.) / the-statues / [negative] / (she) talks / and-[negative] / (she) listens

(3-7) وإنّ هذه الأصنام لا تضرّ ولا تنفع!

waʾinna hāḍihi- lʾaṣnāma taḍurru walā tanfaʿ

And verily, these statues don't harm and don't benefit!

and-verily / this(f.) / the-statues / [negative] / (she) harms / and-[negative] / (she) benefits

(3-8) ولأيّ شيء تضع لها الطّعام والشّراب؟

waliʾayyi shayʾin taḍaʿu lahā- ṭṭaʿāma washsharāb

And for what reason do you put for them food and drinks?

and-for-which / thing / (you) put / for-her / the-food / and-the-drinks

(3-9) وإنّ هذه الأصنام يا أبي لا تأكل ولا تشرب!

waʾinna hāḍihi- lʾaṣnāma ʾabī taʾkulu walā tashrab

And verily, these statues, O father, don't eat or drink!

and-verily / this(f.) / the-statues / O / father-my / [negative] / (she) eats / and-[negative] / (she) drinks

(3-10) وكان إبراهيم ينصح لقومه، وكان النّاس يغضبون ولا يفهمون.

wakāna ʾibrāhīmu yanṣaḥu liqawmihi wakāna- nnāsu yaghḍabūna walā yafhamūn

And Abraham used to advise his people, and his people would become angry and not understand.

and-(he) was (used to) / Abraham / (he) advises / to-people-his / and-were (used to) / the-people / become angry-they / and-[negative] / become understanding-they

(3-11) قال إبراهيم أنا أكسر الأصنام إذا ذهب النّاس، وحينئذ يفهم النّاس.

qāla ʾibrāhīmu ʾanā ʾaksiru- lʾaṣnāma ʾiḍā ḍahaba- nnāsu waḥīnaʾiḍin yafhamu- nnās

Abraham said I'll break the statues if the people leave, then the people will understand.

said / Abraham / I / I break / the-statues / if / went / the-people / and-then / understand / the-people

(4-1) إبراهيم يكسر الأصنام

ʾibrāhīmu yaksiru- lʾaṣnām

Abraham Breaks the Statues

Abraham / (he) breaks / the statues

(4-2) وجاء يوم عيد ففرح النّاس.

wajāʾa yawmu ʿīdin fafariḥa- nnās

And the day of festivity came and the people cheered.

and-came / (the) day (of) / (a) festival / then-cheered / the-people

(4-3) وخرج والد إبراهيم وقال لإبراهيم: ألا تخرج معنا؟

wakharaja wālidu ʾibrāhīma waqāla liʾibrāhīma ʾalā takhruju maʿanā

And the father of Abraham left and he said to Abraham: Don't you want to leave with us?

and-left / (the) father (of) / Abraham / and-(he) said / to-Abraham / [yes/no]-[negative] / (you) leave / with-us

(4-4) قال إبراهيم: أنا سقيم!

qāla ʾibrāhīmu ʾanā saqīm

Abraham said: I am ill!

said / Abraham / I (am) / ill

(4-5) وذهب النّاس وبقي إبراهيم في البيت.

waḍahaba- nnāsu wabaqiya ʾibrāhīmu fī- lbayt

And the people went and Abraham remained in the house.

and-went / the people / and-remained / Abraham / in / the-house

(4-6) وجاء إبراهيم إلى الأصنام، وقال للأصنام: ألا تتكلّمون؟ ألا تسمعون؟

wajāʾa ʾibrāhīmu ʾilā- lʾaṣnāmi waqāla lilʾṣnāmi ʾalā tatakallamūna ʾalā tasmaʿūn

And Abraham came to the statues and said to the statues: Don't you all talk? Don't you all listen?

and-came / Abraham / to / the-statues / and-(he) said / to-the-statues / [yes/no]-[negative] / talk-you all / [yes/no]-[negative] / listen-you all

(4-7) هذا طعام وشراب، ألا تأكلون؟ ألا تشربون؟

hāḍa ṭaʿāmun washarābun ʾalā taʾkalūna ʾalā tashrabawn

This is food and drink. Don't you all eat? Don't you all drink?

this (is) / (a) food / and-(a) drink / [yes/no]-[negative] / eat-you all / [yes/no]-[negative] / drink-you all

(4-8) وسكتت الأصنام لأنّها حجارة لا تنطق.

wasakatati- lʾaṣnāmu liʾannahā ḥijāratun tanṭiq

And the statues kept silent because they're stones; they don't talk.

and-hushed(f.) / the statues / because-she (is) / stones / doesn't / (she) articulates

(4-9) قال إبراهيم: ﴿ما لكم لا تنطقون﴾

qāla ʾibrāhīmu lakum tanṭiqūn

Abraham said: What is wrong with you that you don't articulate?

Abraham / (he) said / what (is) / with-you / [negative] / (you) articulate

(4-10) وسكتت الأصنام وما نطقت.

wasakatati- lʾaṣnāmu wamā naṭaqat

And the statues kept silent and didn't articulate.

and-hushed(f.) / the statues / and-didn't / (she) articulated

(4-11) حينئذ إبراهيم غضب وأخذ الفأس.

ḥīnaʾiḍin ʾibrāhīmu ghaḍiba waʾakhaḍa- lfaʾs

Then Abraham became angry and took the axe.

then / Abraham / (he) became angry / and-(he) took / the-axe

(4-12) وإبراهيم ضرب الأصنام بالفأس وكسر الأصنام.

waʾibrāhīmu ḍaraba- lʾaṣnāma bilfaʾsi wakasara- lʾaṣnām

And Abraham hit the statues with the axe and broke the statues.

and-Abraham / (he) hit / the-statues / with-the-axe / and-(he) broke / the-statues

(4-13) وترك إبراهيم الصّنم الأكبر وعلّق الفأس في عنقه.

wataraka ʾibrāhīmu- ṣṣanama- lʾakbara waʿallaqa- lfaʾsa ʿunuqih

And Abraham left the biggest statue and he hung the axe on its neck.

and-left / Abraham / the-statue / the-biggest / and-(he) hung / the-axe / in / neck-his

(5-1) من فعل هذا

man faʿala hāḍa

Who Did This?

who / (he) did / this

(5-2) ورجع النّاس ودخلوا في بيت الأصنام.

warajaʿa- nnāsu wadakhalū bayti- lʾṣnām

And the people returned and they entered in the house of the statues.

and-returned / the-people / and-entered-they / in / (the) house (of) / the-statues

(5-3) وأراد النّاس أن يسجدوا للأصنام لأنّه يوم عيد.

waʾarāda- nnāsu ʾan yasjudū lilʾaṣnāmi liʾannahu yawmu ʿīdin

And the poeple wanted to prostrate to the statues because it's the day of festivity.

and-wanted / the-people / that / prostrate-they / to-the-statues / because-he (is) / (the) day (of) / (a) festival

(5-4) ولكن تعجّب النّاس ودهشوا.

walkin taʿajjaba- nnāsu wadahishū

But the people were bewildered and surprised.

and-but / became bewildered / the-people / and-became surprised-they

(5-5) وتأسّف النّاس وغضبوا.

wataʾassafa- nnāsu waghaḍibū

The poeple felt sorrow and became angry.

and-were sorrwed / the people / and-became angry-they

(5-6) قالوا: ﴿من فعل هذا بآلهتنا﴾؟

qālū man faʿala hāḍa biʾālihatinā

They said: Who did this with our gods?

said-they / who / (he) did / this / with-gods-our

(5-7) ﴿قالوا سمعنا فتى يذكرهم يقال له: إبراهيم﴾.

qālū samiʿnā fatanā yaḍkuruhum yuqālu lahu ʾiibrāhīmu

They said: We heard a boy mention them; he's called Abraham.

said-they / heard-we / (a) boy / (he) mentions-them / it is said / to-him / Abraham

(5-8) ﴿قالوا ءأنت فعلت هذا بآلهتنا يا إبراهيم﴾؟

qālū ʾʾanta faʿalta hāḍa biʾālihatinā ʾibrāhīmu

They said: Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?

said-they / [yes/no]-you / did-you / this / with-gods-our / O / Abraham

(5-9) ﴿قال بل فعله كبيرهم هذا فسألوهم إن كانوا ينطقون﴾.

qāla bal faʿalahu kabīruhum hāḍa fasʾalūhum ʾin kānū yanṭiqūn

He said nay! The biggest one did this, so ask them if they ever used to speak.

(he) said / (nay) rather / did-he / (the) big (of)-them / this / so-ask(pl.)-them / if / were (used to)-they / articulate-they

(5-10) وكان النّاس يعرفون أنّ الأصنام حجارة.

wakāna- nnāsu yaʿrifūna ʾanna- lʾṣnāma ḥijārah

And the people knew that the statues were stones.

and-were (used to) / the-people / know-they / that / the-statues (are) / stones

(5-11) وكانوا يعرفون أنّ الحجارة لا تسمع ولا تنطق.

wakānū yaʿrifūna ʾanna- lḥijārata tasmaʿu walā tanṭiqu

And they knew that the stones don't listen and don't talk.

and-were (used to) / know-they / that / the-stones / [negative] / (she) listens / and-[negative] / (she) articulates

(5-12) وكانوا يعرفون أنّ الصّنم الأكبر أيضا حجر.

wakānū yaʿrifūna ʾanna- ṣṣanama- lʾakbara ʾayḍan ḥajarun

And they knew that the biggest statue is also a stone.

and-were (used to)-they / know-they / that / the-statue / the-bigger (is) / also / (a) stone

(5-13) وأنّ الصّنم الأكبر لا يقدر أن يمشي ويتحرّك.

waʾanna- ṣṣanama- lʾakbara yaqdiru ʾan yamshiya wayataḥarraka

And that the biggest statue can't walk or move.

and-that / the-statue / the-bigger / [negative] / (he) can / that / (he) walks / and-(he) moves

(5-14) وأنّ الصّنم الأكبر لا يقدر أن يكسر الأصنام.

waʾanna- ṣṣanama- lʾakbara yaqdiru ʾan yaksiru- lʾaṣnām

And that the biggest statue can't break the statues.

and-that / the-statue / the-bigger / [negative] / (he) can / that / (he) breaks / the-statues

(5-15) فقالوا لإبراهيم: أنت تعلم أنّ الأصنام لا تنطق.

faqālū liʾibrāhīma ʾanta taʿlamu ʾanna- lʾaṣnāma tanṭiqu

So they said to Abraham: You know that the statues don't talk.

so-said-they / to-Abraham / you / (you) know / that / the-statues / [negative] / (she) articulates

(5-16) قال إبراهيم: فكيف تعبدون الأصنام وإنّها لا تضرّ ولا تنفع؟

qāla ʾibrāhīmu fakayfa taʿbudūna- lʾṣnāma waʾinnahā taḍurru walā tanfaʿu

Abraham said: Then how are you worshipping the statues when they cannot even harm or benefit?

said / Abraham / so-how / worship-you all / the-statues / and-verily-she / [negative] / (she) harms / and-[negative] / (she) benefits

(5-17) وكيف تسألون الأصنام وإنّها لا تنطق ولا تسمع؟

wakayfa tasʾalūna- lʾṣnāma waʾinnahā tanṭiqu walā tasmaʿu

And how are you all asking the statues when they cannot speak or listen?

and-how / ask-you all / the-statues / and-verily-she / [negative] / (she) articulates / and-[negative] / (she) listens

(5-18) ألا تفهمون شيئا؟ أفلا تعقلون؟

ʾalā tafhamūna shayʾan ʾafalā taʿqilūna

Don't you all understand a thing? So why won't you all comprehend?

[yes/no]-[negative] / understand-you all / (a) thing / [yes/no]-so-[negative] / comprehend-you-all

(5-19) وسكت النّاس وخجلوا.

wasakata- nnāsu wakhajilū

And the people became silent, and they were ashamed.

and-hushed / the-people / and-became ashamed-they

(6-1) نار باردة

nārun bāridah

A Cold Fire

(a) fire / (a) cold(f.)

(6-2) اجتمع النّاس وقالوا: ماذا نفعل؟

jtamaʿa- nnāsu waqālū māḍā nafʿalu

The people gathered and said: What do we do?

gathered / the-people / and-said-they / what (do) / we-do

(6-3) إنّ إبراهيم كسر الأصنام وأهان الآلهة!

ʾiinna ʾibrāhīma kasara- lʾaṣnāma waʾahāna- lʾālihah

Verily, Abraham broke the statues and humiliated the gods!

verily / Abraham / (he) broke / the-statues / and-(he) humiliated / the-gods

(6-4) وسأل النّاس: ما عقاب إبراهيم؟ ما جزاء إبراهيم؟

wasaʾala- nnāsu ʿiqābu ʾibrāhīma jazāʾu ʾibrāhīma

And the people asked: What is the punishment of Abraham? What's Abraham's requital?

and-asked / the-people / what (is) / (the) punishment (of) / Abraham / what (is) / (the) requital (of) / Abraham

(6-5) كان الجواب: ﴿حرّقوه وانصروا ءالهتكم﴾.

kāna- ljawābu ḥarriqūhu wānṣurū ʾālihatakum

The answer was: Burn him, and bring victory to your gods.

was / the-answer / burn(pl.)-him / and-render victorious(pl.) / (the) gods (of)-you all

(6-6) وهكذا كان: أوقدوا نارا وألقوا فيها إبراهيم.

wahakaḍā kāna ʾawqadū nāran waʾalqū fīhā ʾibrāhīma

And it was like that. They kindled a fire and threw Abraham in it.

and-like-that / was / kindled-they / (a) fire / and-threw-they / in-her / Abraham

(6-7) ولكنّ اللّه نصر إبراهيم وقال للنّار:

walakinna- llaha naṣara ʾibrāhīma waqāla lilnnāri

However, God rendered Abraham victorious, and he said to the fire:

and-but / God / (he) rendered victorious / Abraham / and-(he) said / to-the-fire

(6-8) ﴿يا نار كوني بردا وسلاما على إبراهيم﴾.

nāru kūnī bardan wasalāman ʿalaā ʾibrāhīma

O fire, be cold and secure on Abraham.

O / fire / be / (a) cold / and-(a) secure / on / Abraham

(6-9) وهكذا كان، كانت النّار بردا وسلاما على إبراهيم.

wahakaḍā kāna kānati- nnāru bardan wasalāman ʿalaā ʾibrāhīma

And it was like that. The fire was cold and secure on Abraham.

and-like-that / was / was-she / the-fire / (a) cold / and-(a) secure / on / Abraham

(6-10) ورأى النّاس أنّ النّار لا تضرّ إبراهيم.

waraʾā- nnāsu ʾanna- nnāra taḍurru ʾibrāhīma

And the people saw that the fire doesn't harm Abraham.

and-saw / the-people / that / the-fire / [negative] / (she) harms / Abraham

(6-11) ورأى النّاس أنّ إبراهيم مسرور، وأنّ إبراهيم سالم.

waraʾaā- nnāsu ʾanna ʾibrāhīma masrūrun waʾanna ʾibrāhīma sālimun

And the people saw that Abraham was happy and that Abraham is secure.

and-saw / the-people / that / Abraham / (a) happy / and-that / Abraham (is) / (a) secure

(6-12) ودهش النّاس وتحيّروا.

wadahishu- nnāsu wataḥayyarū

And the poeple were surprised and baffled.

and-became surprised-they / the-people / and-became baffled-they

(7-1) من ربّي؟

man rabbī

Who is my lord?

who (is) / lord-my

(7-2) وذات ليلة رأى إبراهيم كوكبا، فقال: هذا ربّي.

waḍāta laylatin raʾaā ʾibrāhīmu kawkaban faqāla hāḍa rabbī

And one night, Abraham saw a star and said: this is my lord.

and-one / night / saw / Abraham / (a) star / so-(he) said / this (is) / lord-my

(7-3) ولمّا غاب الكوكب قال إبراهيم: لا! هذا ليس بربّي.

walammā ghāba- lkawkabu qāla ʾibrāhīmu hāḍa laysa birabbī

And when the star disappeared, Abraham said: no, this is not possible with my lord.

and-when / disappeared / the-star / said / Abraham / no / this / is not / with-lord-my

(7-4) ورأى إبراهيم القمر فقال: هذا ربّي.

waraʾaā ʾibrāhīmu- lqamara faqāla hāḍa rabbī

And Abraham saw the moon, so he said: This is my lord.

and-saw / Abraham / the-moon / so-(he) said / this (is) / lord-my

(7-5) ولمّا غاب القمر قال إبراهيم: لا! هذا ليس بربّي.

walammā ghāba- lqamaru qāla ʾibrāhīmu hāḍa laysa birabbī

And when the moon disappeared, Abraham said: No! This is not possible with my lord.

and-when / disappeared / the-moon / said / Abraham / no / this / is not / with-lord-my

(7-6) وطلعت الشّمس فقال إبراهيم: هذا ربّي هذا أكبر﴾.

waṭalaʿati- shshamsu faqāla ʾibrāhīmu hāḍa rabbī hāḍa ʾakbaru

And the sun appeared, so Abraham said: This is my lord. This is greater.

and-appeared(f.) / the-sun / so-said / Abraham / this (is) / lord-my / this (is) / greater

(7-7) ولمّا غابت الشّمس في اللّيل قال إبراهيم: لا! هذا ليس بربّي.

walammā ghābati- shshamsu fī- llayli qāla ʾibrāhīmu hāḍa laysa birabbī

And when the sun disappeared into the night, Abraham said: No! This is not possible with my lord.

and-when / disappeared(f.) / the-sun / in / the-night / said / Abraham / no / this / is not / with-lord-my

(7-8) إنّ اللّه حيّ لا يموت.

ʾiinna- llaha ḥayyun yamūt

Good is indeed alive! He does not die.

(7-9) إنّ اللّه باق لا يغيب.

ʾiinna- llaha bāqin yaghību

Indeed, God always remains. He does not disappear.

(7-10) إنّ اللّه قويّ لا يغلبه شيء.

ʾiinna- llaha qawiyyun yaghlibuhu shayʾun

Indeed, God is strong, and not a thing can defeat him.

(7-11) والكوكب ضعيف يغلبه الصّبح.

walkawkabu ḍaʿīfun yaghlibuhu- ṣṣubḥu

And the star is weak. The morning defeats it.

(7-12) والقمر ضعيف تغلبه الشّمس.

walqamaru ḍaʿīfun taghlibuhu- shshamsu

And the moon is weak. The sun defeats him.

and-the-moon (is) / (a) weak / defeats(f.)-him / the-sun

(7-13) والشّمس ضعيفة يغلبها اللّيل ويغلبها الغيم.

washshamsu ḍaʿīfatun yaghlibuhā- llaylu wayaghlibuhā- lghaymu

And the sun is weak. The night defeats it, and the clouds defeat it.

(7-14) ولا ينصرني الكوكب لأنّه ضعيف.

walā yanṣurunī- lkawkabu liʾannahu ḍaʿīfun

And the star can't save me because it's weak.

(7-15) ولا ينصرني القمر لأنّه ضعيف.

walā yanṣurunī- lqamaru liʾannahu ḍaʿīfun

And the moon can't save me because it's weak.

(7-16) ولا تنصرني الشّمس لأنّها ضعيفة.

walā tanṣurunī- shshamsu liʾannahā ḍaʿīfah

And the sun cannot save me because it's weak.

(7-17) وينصرني اللّه.

wayanṣurunī- llahu

And God saves me.

(7-18) لأنّ اللّه حيّ لا يموت.

(7-19) وباق لا يغيب.

And he's always present. He doesn't disappear.

And he's strong. Not a thing can defeat him.

God is my lord

(8-2) وعرف إبراهيم أنّ اللّه ربّه.

waʿarafa ʾibrāhīmu ʾanna- llaha rabbuhu

And Abraham knew that God is his lord.

(8-3) لأنّ اللّه حيّ لا يموت.

(8-6) وعرف إبراهيم أنّ اللّه ربّ الكوكب!

And Abraham knew that God is the lord of the stars!

(8-7) وأنّ اللّه ربّ القمر!

waʾanna- llaha rabbu- lqamari

And that God is the lord of the moon!

and-that / God (is) / (the) lord (of) / the-moon

(8-8) وأنّ اللّه ربّ الشّمس!

waʾanna- llaha rabbu- shshamsi

And that God is the lord of the sun!

and-that / God (is) / (the) lord (of) / the-sun

(8-9) وأنّ اللّه ربّ العالمين!

waʾanna- llaha rabbu- lʿālamīna

And that God is the lord of the words!

and-that / God (is) / (the) lord (of) / the-worlds

(8-10) وهدى اللّه إبراهيم وجعله نبيّا وخليلا.

wahadaā- llahu ʾibrāhīma wajaʿalahu nabīyan wakhalīlan

And God guided Abraham and made him into a prophet and a friend.

(8-11) وأمر اللّه إبراهيم أن يدعو قومه ويمنعهم من عبادة الأصنام.

waʾamara- llahu ʾibrāhīma ʾan yadʿwa qawmahu wayamnaʿahum min ʿibādati- lʾaṣnāmi

And God ordered Abraham that he invite his people and prevent them from worshipping their statues.

The Invitation of Abraham

(9-2) ودعا إبراهيم قومه إلى اللّه ومنعهم من عبادة الأصنام قال إبراهيم لقومه: ما تعبدون؟

wadaʿā ʾibrāhīmu qawmahu ʾilā- llahi wamanaʿahum min ʿibādati- lʾaṣnāmi qāla ʾibrāhīmu liqawmihi taʿbudūna

And Abraham invited his people to God and he prevented them from worshipping the statues. Abraham said to his people: what do you all worship?

(9-3) ﴿قالوا نعبد أصناما﴾.

qālū naʿbudu ʾaṣnāman

They said we worship the statues.

Abraham said:

(9-5) ﴿هل يسمعونكم إذ تدعون؟﴾

hal yasmaʿūnakum ʾiḍ tadʿūna

Would they listen to you if you invite them?

[yes/no] / listen-they-you all / if / invite-you all

(9-6) ﴿أو ينفعونكم أو يضرّون؟﴾

ʾaw yanfaʿūnakum ʾaw yaḍarrūna

Or would they benefit you or harm you?

or / benefit-they-you all / or / harm-they

(9-7) ﴿قالوا بل وجدنا آباءنا كذلك يفعلون﴾

qālū bal wajadnā ʾābāʾanā kaḍalika yafʿalūna

They said nay, rather we found our fathers acting like that.

(9-8) قال إبراهيم: فأنا لا أعبد هذه الأصنام.

qāla ʾibrāhīmu faʾanā ʾaʿbudu hāḍihi- lʾaṣnāma

Abraham said: Therefore, I don't worship these statues.

(9-9) بل أنا عدوّ لهذه الأصنام.

bal ʾanā ʿaduwwun lihāḍihi- lʾaṣnāmi

Instead, I'm an enemy to these statues.

(9-10) أنا أعبد ربّ العالمين.

ʾanā ʾaʿbudu rabba- lʿālamīna

I worship the lord of the worlds.

(9-11) ﴿الّذى خلقنى فهو يهدين﴾.

aḍḍaḍiā khalaqaniā fahuwa yahdīni

He who created me, and therefore guides me.

(9-12) ﴿والّذى هو يطعمنى ويسقين﴾.

waḍḍaḍiā huwa yuṭʿimuniā wayasqīni

And he who feeds me and quenches my thirst.

(9-13) ﴿وإذا مرضت فهو يشفين﴾.

waʾiḍā mariḍtu fahuwa yashfīni

And if I became ill, he heals me.

and-if / became ill-I / then-he / (he) heals-me

(9-14) ﴿والّذى يميتنى ثمّ يحيين﴾.

waḍḍaḍiā yumītuniā thumma yuḥyīni

And he who causes me to die, and shortly thereafter brings me to life.

and-he who / (he) causes death-me / and shortly after / (he) causes life-me

(9-15) وإنّ الأصنام لا تخلق ولا تهدي.

waʾinna- lʾaṣnāma takhluqu walā tahdī

And indeed, the statues don't create or guide.

and-verily / the-statues / [negative] / she creates / and-[negative] / she guides

(9-16) وإنّها لا تطعم أحدا ولا تسقي.

waʾinnahā tuṭʿimu ʾaḥadan walā tasqī

And indeed, they don't feed anyone, nor do they quench.

and-verily-she / [negative] / (she) feeds / one / and-[negative] / (she) quenches

(9-17) وإذا مرض أحد فهي لا تشفي.

waʾiḍā mariḍa ʾaḥadun fahiya tashfī

And if someone became ill, they wouldn't heal.

and-if / became ill / one / then-she / [negative] / (she) heals

(9-18) وإنّها لا تميت أحدا ولا تحيي.

waʾinnahā tumītu ʾaḥadan walā tuḥīī

And verily, they don't cause death to anyone, nor bring them to life.

and-verily-she / [negative] / (she) causes death / one / and-[negative] / (she) cause life

(10-1) أمام الملك

ʾamāma- lmaliki

In Front of the King

in front of / the-king

(10-2) كان في المدينة ملك كبير جدّا، وظالم جدّا.

kāna fī- lmadīnati malikun kabīrun jiddā waẓālimun jiddan

There was in the city a very great thing, and he was a severe oppressor.

(there) was / in / the-city / (a) king / (a) great / very / and-(an) evil doer / very

(10-3) وكان النّاس يسجدون للملك.

wakāna- nnāsu yasjudūna lilmaliki

And the people used to prostrate to the king.

and-was (used to) / the-people / prostrate-they / to-the-king

(10-4) وسمع الملك أنّ إبراهيم يسجد للّه ولا يسجد لأحد.

wasamiʿa- lmaliku ʾanna ʾibrāhīma yasjudu lillahi walā yasjudu lʾaḥadin

And the king heard that Abraham prostrates to God, and he doesn't prostrate to anyone.

(10-5) فغضب الملك وطلب إبراهيم.

faghaḍiba- lmaliku waṭalaba ʾibrāhīma

So the king became angry, and he requested Abraham.

(10-6) وجاء إبراهيم وكان إبراهيم لا يخاف أحدا، إلا اللّه.

wajāʾ ʾiibrāhīmu wakāna ʾiibrāhīmu yakhāfu ʾaḥadan ʾilā- llaha

And Abraham arrived, and Abraham did not fear anyone except for God.

(10-7) قال إبراهيم: ربّي اللّه!

qāla ʾiibrāhīmu rabbiya- llahu

Abraham said: My lord is God!

(10-8) قال الملك: من اللّه يا إبراهيم؟

qāla- lmaliku mani- llhu ʾibrāhīmu

The king said: Who is God, O Abraham?

(10-9) قال إبراهيم: ﴿الّذى يحى ويميت﴾.

qāla ʾiibrāhīmu ḍḍaḍiā yuḥāi wayumītu

Abraham said: He who causes life and death.

(10-10) قال الملك: ﴿أنا أحي وأميت﴾.

qāla- lmaliku ʾnā ʾuḥyi waʾumītu

The king said: I cause life and death.

(10-11) ودعا الملك رجلا وقتله.

wadaʿā- lmaliku rajulan waqatalahu

And the king summoned a mand and killed him.

and-summoned / the-king / (a) man / and-(he) killed-him

(10-12) ودعا رجلا آخر وتركه.

wadaʿā rajulan ʾākhara watarakahu

And he summoned another man and left him.

and-(he) summoned / (a) man / another / and-(he) left-him

(10-13) وقال: أنا أحي وأميت، قتلت رجلا وتركت رجلا. وكان الملك بليدا جدّا،

waqāla ʾanā ʾḥī waʾumītu qataltu rajulan wataraktu rajulan wakāna- lmaliku balīdan jiddan

And he said: I cause life and death. I killed a man and I left a man. The king was very stupid.

and-(he) said / I / I cause life / and-I cause death / killed-I / (a) man / and-left-I / (a) man / and-was / the-king / (a) stupid / very

(10-14) وكذلك كلّ مشرك.

wakaḍalika kullu mushrikin

And like that is every polytheist

and-like-that / every / (a) partnerer

(10-15) وأراد إبراهيم أن يفهم الملك، ويفهم قومه، فقال إبراهيم للملك: ﴿فإنّ اللّه يأتي بالشّمس من المشرق فأت بها من المغرب﴾.

waʾarāda ʾiibrāhīmu ʾan yafhama- lmaliku wayafhama qawmuhu faqāla ʾibrāhīmu lilmaliku faʾinna- llaha yaʾtyi bishshamsi mina- lmashriqi faʾti bihā mina- lmaghribi

And Abraham wanted the king and his people to understand, so Abraham said to the king: Verily God brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west.

And-wanted / Abraham / that / understand / the-king / and-understand / people-his / so-said / Abraham / to-the-king / then-verily / God / (he) performs / with-the-sun / from / the-east / so-perform / with-her / from / the-west

(10-16) فتحيّر الملك وسكت.

fataḥayyara- lmaliku wasakata

So the king was dismayed, and he went silent.

so-became dismayed / the-king / and-(he) hushed

(10-17) وخجل الملك، وما وجد جوابا.

wakhajila- lmaliku wamā wajada jawāban

And the king was ashamed, and he didn't find an rebuttal.

and-became ashamed / the-king / and-[negative] / (he) found / (an) answer

(11-1) دعوة الوالد

daʿwatu- lwālidi

The Invitation of the Father

(the) invitation (of) / the-father

(11-2) وأراد إبراهيم أن يدعو والده أيضا، فقال له:

waʾarāda ʾiibrāhīmu ʾan yadʿuwa wālidahu ʾayḍan faqāla lahu

And Abraham wanted to invite his father as well, so he told him:

and-wanted / Abraham / that / (he) invites / (the) father (of)-his / also / so-(he) said / to-him

(11-3) يا أبت لم يعبد ما لا يسمع ولا يبصر؟

ʾabati lima yaʿbudu yasmaʿu walā yubṣiru

O my fahter, why do you worship what doesn't listen or perceive?

O / father-my / why / (you) worship / what / [negative] / (he) listens / and-[negative] (he) perceives

(11-4) ولم تعبد ما لا ينفع ولا يضرّ؟

walima taʿbudu yanfaʿu walā yaḍurru

And why do you worship what doesn't benefit or harm?

and-why / (you) worship / what / [negative] / (he) benefits / and-[negative] / (he) harms

(11-5) ﴿يا أبت لا تعبد الشّيطان﴾.

ʾabati taʿbudi- shshayṭāna

O my father, don't worship the devil!

O / father-my / [negative] / (you) worship / the-devil

(11-6) يا أبت اعبد الرّحمن!

ʾabati- ʿbudi- rraḥmana

O my father, worship the most merciful!

O / father-my / worship / the-merciful

(11-7) وغدب والد إبراهيم وقال: أنا أضربك فاتركني ولا تقل شيئا.

waghadiba wālidu ʾibrāhīma waqāla ʾanā ʾaḍribuka fātruknī walā taqul shayʾan

The father of Abraham was angered, and he said: I'll hit you, so leave me and don't say a thing.

and-became angry / (the) father (of) / Abraham / and-(he) said / I / I hit-you / so-leave-me / and-[negative] / say / (a) thing

(11-8) وكان إبراهيم حليما، فقال لوالده: ﴿سلام عليك﴾.

wakāna ʾiibrāhīmu ḥalīman faqāla liwālidihi salāmun ʿalayka

And Abraham was gentle, so he said to his father: peace be upon you.

and-was / Abraham / (a) gentle / so-(he) said / to-father-his / (a) peace / upon-you

(11-9) وقال له: أنا أذهب من هنا وأدعو ربّي.

waqāla lahu ʾanā ʾaḍhabu min hunā waʾadʿū rabbī

And he said to him: I'll go from here and call upon my lord.

and-(he) said / to-him / I / I go / from / here / and-I call / lord-my

(11-10) وتأسّف إبراهيم جدّا، وأراد أن يذهب إلى بلد آخر، ويعبد ربّه، ويدعو النّاس إلى اللّه.

wataʾassafa ʾibrāhīmu jiddan waʾarāda ʾan yaḍhaba ʾilā baladin ʾākhara wayaʿbuda rabbahu wayadʿuwa- nnāsa ʾilā- llahi

Abraham sorrowed, and he wanted to go to another city, and worship his lord, and invite the people to God.

and-sorrowed / Abraham / very / and-(he) wanted / that / (he) go / to / (a) city / another / and-(he) worships / lord-his / and-(he) invites / the-people / to / God

(12-1) إلى مكّة

ʾilā makkah

To Mecca

to / Mecca

(12-2) وغضب قوم إبراهيم وغضب الملك وغضب والد إبراهيم.

waghaḍiba qawmu ʾibrāhīma waghaḍiba- lmaliku waghaḍiba wālidu ʾibrāhīma

And the people of Abraham was angered, and the king was angered, and Abraham's father was angered.

and-became angry / (the) people (of) / Abraham / and-became angry / the-king / and-became angry / (the) father (of) / Abraham

(12-3) وأراد إبراهيم أن يسافر إلى بلد آخر ويعبد فيه اللّه ويدعو النّاس إلى اللّه.

waʾarāda ʾibrāhīmu ʾan yusāfira ʾilā baladin ʾākhara wayaʿbuda fīhi- llaha wayadʿuwa- nnāsa ʾilā- llahi

And Abraham wanted to travel to another city and worship God in it, and call the people to God.

and-wanted / Abraham / that / (he) travels / to / (a) city / another / and-(he) worships / in-him / God / and-(he) calls / the-people / to / God

(12-4) وخرج إبراهيم من بلده وودّع والده.

wakharaja ʾibrāhīmu min baladihi wawaddaʿa wālidahu

Abraham left his city and he bid farewell to his father.

And-left / Abraham / from / city-his / and-(he) bid farewell / father-his

(12-5) وقصد إبراهيم مكّة ومعه زوجه هاجر.

waqaṣada ʾibrāhīmu makkata wamaʿahu zawjuhu hājaru

Abraham went straight away to Mecca, and with him was his spouse Hagar.

and-went straight away / Abraham / Mecca / and-with-him / spouse-his / Hagar

(12-6) وكانت مكّة ليس فيها عشب ولا شجر.

wakānat makkatu laysa fīhā ʿushbun walā shajarun

And Mecca did not have in it a single pasture or a tree.

and-was(f.) / Mecca / not / in-her / (a) pasture / and-[negative] / (a) tree

(12-7) وكانت مكّة ليس فيها بئر ولا نهر.

wakānat makkatu laysa fīhā biʾrun walā nahrun

And Mecca did not have a spring or a river.

and-was(f.) / Mecca / not / in-her / (a) well / and-[negative] / (a) river

(12-8) وكانت مكّة ليس فيها حيوان ولا بشر.

wakānat makkatu laysa fīhā ḥayawānun walā basharun

And Mecca did not have within it a single animal or a human.

and-was(f.) / Mecca / not / in-her / (an) animal / and-[negative] / (a) human

(12-9) ووصل إبراهيم إلى مكّة ونزل فيها.

wawaṣala ʾibrāhīmu ʾilā makkata wanazala fīhā

And Abraham reached Mecca, and he camped there.

and-reached / Abraham / to / Mecca / and-(he) descended / in-her

(12-10) وترك إبراهيم زوجه هاجر وولده إسماعيل، ولمّا أراد إبراهيم أن يذهب قالت زوجه هاجر إلى أين يا سيّدي؟ أتتركني هنا؟

wataraka ʾibrāhīmu zawjahu hājara wawaladahu ʾismāʿīla walammā ʾrāda ʾibrāhīmu ʾan yaḍhaba qālat zawjuhu hājaru ʾilā ʾayna sayyidī ʾatatrukunī hunā

And Abraham left his spouse Hagar and his son Ishmail, and when Abraham wanted to go, his spouse, Hagar, said: to where my master? Are you leaving me here?

and-left / Abraham / spouse-his / Hagar / and-son-his / Ishmail / and-when / wanted / Abraham / that / (he) goes / said(f.) / spouse-his / to / where / O / master-my / [yes/no]-(you) leave-me / here

(12-11) أتتركني وليس هنا ماء ولا طعام!

ʾatatrukunī walaysa hunā māʾun walā ṭaʿāmun

Are you leaving me here while there's no water or food?

[yes/no]-(you) leave-me / and-not / here / (a) water / and-[negative] / (a) food

(12-12) هل أمرك اللّه بهذا؟

hal ʾamaraka- llahu bihaḍā

Did God command you to do this?

[yes/no] / commanded-you / God / with-this?

(12-13) قال إبراهيم: نعم!

qāla ʾibrāhīmu naʿam

Abraham said: yes!

said / Abraham / yes

(12-14) قالت هاجر: إذا لا يضيعنا!

qālat hājaru ʾiḍan yuḍīʿunā

Hagar said: then God won't neglect us!

said(f.) / Hagar / then / [negative] / (he) loses-us

(13-1) بئر زمزم

biʾru zamzam

The Well of Zamzam

(the) well (of) / Zamzam

(13-2) وعطش إسماعيل مرّة وأرادت أمّه أن تسقيه ماء

waʿaṭisha ʾiismāʿīlu mrrtan waʾrādat ʾummuhu ʾan tasqiyahu māʾan

Ishmael once became thirsty, and his mother wanted to quench his thirst with water.

and-became thirsty / Ishmael / once / and-wanted(f.) / mother-his / that / (she) quenches-him / water

(13-3) ولكن أين الماء؟ ومكّة ليس فيها بئر ومكّة ليس فيها نهر!

wlkn ʾīna- lmāʾ wamakkatu laysa fīhā biʾrun wamakkatu laysa fīhā nahrun

But where's the water? Mecca has no well, and Mecca has no river.

(13-4) وكانت هاجر تطلب الماء وتجري من الصّفا إلى المروة، ومن المروة إلى الصّفا.

wakānat hājaru taṭlubu- lmāʾa watajrī mina- ṣṣafā ʾilā- lmarwati wamina- lmarwati ʾilā- ṣṣafā

And Hagar would search for water, and run from Safa to Marwa, and from Marwa to Safa.

and-was(f.) / Hagar / (she) searches / the-water / and-(she) streams / from / Safa / to / Marwa / and-from / Marwa / to / Safa

(13-5) ونصر اللّه هاجر ونصر إسماعيل فخلق لهما ماء.

wanaṣara- llahu hājara wanaṣara ʾiismāʿīla fakhalaqa lahumā māʾan

God saved Hagar and he saved Ishmael, so he created for both of them water.

and-saved / God / Hagar / and-(he) saved / Ishmael / so-(he) created / for-them two / water

(13-6) وخرج الماء من الأرض وشرب إسماعيل وشربت هاجر وبقي الماء فكان بئر زمزم.

wakharaja- lmāʾu mina- lʾarḍi washariba ʾismāʿīlu washaribat hājr wabaqiya- lmāʾu fakāna biʾra zamzam

And the water surged from the land, and Ishmael drank, and Hagar drank, and more water remained, thus it became 'The Well of Zamzam.'

(13-7) فبارك اللّه في زمزم وهذه هي البئر الّتي يشرب منها النّاس في الهجّ

Thus, God blessed Zamzam, and this is the well which people drink from in the pilgrimage.

(13-8) ويأتون بماء زمزم إلى بلدهم.

The Vision of Abraham

(14-2) وعاد إبراهيم إلى مكّة بعد مدّة.

waʿāda ʾiibrāhīmu ʾilaā makkata baʿda muddah

And Abraham returned to Mecca after a while.

(14-3) ولقي إسماعيل ولقي هاجر وفرح إبراهيم بولده إسماعيل.

walaqiya ʾismāʿīla walaqiya hājara wafariḥa ʾiibrāhīmu biwaladihi ʾismāʿīl

And he found Ishmael, and he found Hagar, and he was delighted with his son Ishmael.

(14-4) وكان إسماعيل ولدا صغيرا يجري ويلعب ويخرج مع والده.

And Ishmael was a small boy. He would run, play, and go out with his father.

(14-5) وكان إبراهيم يحبّ إسماعيل جدّا

And Abraham used to love Ishmael very much.

(14-6) وذات ليلة رأى إبراهيم في المنام أنّه يذبه إسمعيل.

And one night, Abraham saw in his dream that he slaughters Ishmael.

(14-7) وكان إبراهيم نبيّا صادقا وكان إبراهيم خليل اللّه فأراد أن يفعل ما أمره اللّه في المنام.

wakāna ʾibrāhīmu nabīyan ṣādiqan wakāna ʾibrāhīmu khalīla- llahi faʾarāda ʾan yafʿala ʾamarahu- llahu fī- lmanām

And Abraham was a trustworthy prophet, and Abraham was the friend of God, so he wanted to do what God commanded him in his dream.

(14-8) وقال إبراهيم لإسماعيل: ﴿إنّي أرى في المنام أنّي أذبحك فانظر ماذا ترى﴾.

waqāla ʾibrāhīmu liʾismāʿīla ʾinnī ʾarā fī- lmanāmi ʾannī ʾaḍbaḥuka fānẓur māḍā taraā

And Abraham said to Ishmael: Verily, I see in my dream that I slaughter you, so consider what you're seeing.

(14-9) ﴿قال يا أبت افعل ما تؤمر ستجدني إن شاء اللّه من الصّابرين﴾

He said: O my father, do what you're commanded, and you'll find me among the patient, God willing.

(14-10) وأخذ إبراهيم إسماعيل معه وأخذ سكّينا.

And Abraham took Ishmael with him, and he took a knife.

(14-11) ولمّا بلغ إبراهيم منى أراد أن يذبح إسماعيل.

When Abraham reached Mina, he intended on slaughtering Ishmael.

(14-12) واضطجع إسماعيل على الأرض وأراد إبراهيم أن يذبح فوضع السّكّين على حلقوم إسماعيل.

wāḍṭajaʿa ʾismāʿīlu ʿalaā- lʾarḍ waʾarāda ʾibrāhīmu ʾan yaḍbaḥa fawaḍaʿa- ssikkīna ʿalaā ḥulqūmi ʾismāʿīl

And Ishmael lied down on the ground, and Abraham intended to slaughter, so he placed the knife on Ishmael's throat.

(14-13) ولكنّ اللّه يحبّ أن يرى: هل يفعل خليله ما يأمره وهل يهبّ اللّه أكثر أو يحبّ ابنه أكثر.

walknn llaha yuḥibbu ʾan yaraā hal yafʿalu khalīluhu yaʾmuruhu wahal yuhibbu- llaha ʾakthara ʾaw yuḥibbu- bnahu ʾakthar

However, God loves to see if His friend will do what He orders him: Does he love God more, or does he love his son more?

(14-14) ونجح إبراهيم في الإمتحان.

And Abraham passed the test.

(14-15) فأرسل اللّه جبريل بكبش من الجنّة وقال: اذبح هذا ولا تذبح إسماعيل!

faʾarsala- llahu jibrīla bikabshin mina- ljannati waqāla- ḍbaḥ hāḍa walā taḍbaḥ ʾismāʿīl

So God sent Gabriel with a male sheep from heaven, and he said: Slaughter this and don't slaughter Ishmael!

(14-16) وأحبّ اللّه عمل إبراهيم فأمر المسلمين بالذّبح في عيد الأضحى.

And God loved the work of Abraham, and so he commanded the Muslims to slaughter in the Festival of the Immolation.

(15-2) وذهب إبراهيم وعاد بعد ذلك وأراد أن يبني بيتا لللّه

waḍahaba ʾibrāhīmu waʿāda baʿda ḍālika waʾarāda ʾan yabnya baytan lilllahi

Abraham went and returned, and after that, he wanted to build a house for God.

(15-3) وكانت البيوت كثيرة وما كان بيت لللّه يعبدون فيه اللّه.

And the houses were many, but there wasn't a house for God where people worship God within it.

(15-4) وأراد إسماعيل أن يبني بيتا لللّه مع والده.

And Ishmale wanted to build a house for God with his father.

(15-5) ونقل إبراهيم وإسماعيل الحجارة من الجبال.

wanaqala ʾibrāhīmu waʾismāʿīlu- lḥijārata mina- ljibāla

And Abraham and Ishmael moved the stones from the mountains

(15-6) وكان إبراهيم يبني الكعبة بيده وكان إسماعيل يبني الكعبة بيده.

And Abraham used to build the Kaaba with his own hands, and Ishmael was building the Kaaba with his own hands.

(15-8) وكان إسماعيل يذكر اللّه ويدعو.

And Ishamel was mentioning God and praying.

(15-9) ﴿ربّنا تقبّل منّا إنّك أنت السّميع العليم﴾

rabbanā taqabbal minnā ʾinnaka ʾanta- ssamīʿu- lʿalīmu

Our lord, accept from us. Indeed, you are the listener and the knowledgeable one.

(15-10) وتقبّل اللّه من إبراهيم وإسماعيل وبارك في الكعبة.

God accepted from Abraham and Ishmael, and he blessed the Kaaba.

(15-11) نحن نتوجّه إلى الكعبة في كلّ صلاة.

naḥnu natawajjahu ʾilā- lkaʿbati kulli ṣalāh

We face the cube in every prayer.

(15-12) ويسافر المسلمون إلى الكعبة في أيّام الهجّ ويطوفون بالكعبة ويصلّون عندها.

wayusāfiru- lmuslimūna ʾilā- lkaʿbati ʾayyāmi- lhajji wayaṭūfūna bilkaʿbati wayuṣallūna ʿindahā

The muslims travel to the Kaaba during the days of the pilgrimage, and they circumambulate the Kaaba and pray there.

(15-13) بارك اللّه في الكعبة وتقبّل من إبراهيم وإسماعيل.

God blessed the Kaaba and accepted from Abraham and Ishmael.

The Holy House

(the) house (of) / the holy

(16-2) وكان لإبراهيم زوج أخرى. اسمها سارة.

wakāna liʾiibrāhīma zawjun ʾukhraā- smuhā sārah

Abraham had another spouse, and her name was Sarah.

and-was / with-Abraham / (a) spouse / another / (the) name (of)-her / Sarah

(16-3) وكان لإبراهيم ولد آخر من سارة اسمه إسحاق.

wakāna liʾibrāhīma waladun ʾākharu min sārata- smuhu ʾisḥāq

Abraham had another boy from Sarah, and his name was Isaac.

(16-4) وسكن إبراهيم في الشّام وسكن إسحاق وبنى إسحاق بيتا لللّه في الشّام كما بنى أبوه وأخوه بيتا لللّه في مكّة.

wasakana ʾibrāhīmu fī- shshām wasakana ʾisḥāqu wabanā ʾisḥāqu baytan lilllahi fī- shshāmi kamā banaā ʾabūhu waʾakhūhu baytan lilllahi makkah

Abraham and Isaac lived in the Levant, and Isaac built a house for God in the Levant just like what his father built for God in Mecca.

(16-5) وهذا المسجد الّذي بناه إسحاق في الشّام هو بيت المقدس.

wahḍā- lmasjidu- ḍḍaḍī banāhu ʾisḥāqu fī- shshāmi huwa baytu- lmaqdis

And the mosque which Isaac built in the Levant is the Holy House.

(16-6) وهو المسجد الأقصى الّذي بارك اللّه حوله وبارك اللّه في أولاد إسماعيل وكان فيهم أنبياء وملوك.

wahuwa- lmasjidu- lʾaqṣaā- ḍḍaḍī bāraka- llahu ḥawlahu wabāraka- llahu ʾawlādi ʾismāʿīla wakāna fīhim ʾanbiyāʾu wamulūk

And it's Al Aqsaa, which God blessed around it, and God blessed the children of Ishmael, as some of them were prophets and kings.

And Isaac had a son, whose name was Jacob, and he was a prophet.

(16-8) وكان يعقوب له اثنا عشر ولدا منهم يوسف بن يعقوب.

And Jacob had twelve children, and of them was Joseph, the son of Jacob.

(16-9) ويوسف له قسّة عجيبة في القرآن.
